On My Worktable

Today I have been working on a little painting that will end up being about 8X10 in size. I took a picture several years ago of this plant in our garden- - I believe it is kale! LOL I wasn't quite sure since it has been a while that we have grown any. I had to look online at pictures to make sure I was calling it by the proper name! I couldn't remember if it was cabbage or what. Hubby said it didn't look like cabbage and, come to think of it, I don't know if we ever raised any cabbage. I confess to a senior moment! 😃 I really enjoyed having kale in our freezer, and it was easy to put up- no blanching, just cram a zip-lock freezer bag full and throw it in. We enjoyed the flavor and liked it about as much as spinach, even the kids. So easy to toss it in winter soups!  Hmm. Wish we had grown it this summer!

I was a little unsure of myself when I started on this a couple of days ago. It seemed like a difficult challenge, but as I stepped into the process, I began to figure out how to tackle it. YOU MUST TAKE ONE LEAF AT A TIME. And I believe artistic license will not be out of order here. I am not going to paint an exact replica.

I am trying to really be involved in producing more artwork now, working it in during the day and usually more during my evenings after supper. I'm remembering the advice I heard  at the last workshop I attended in Kentucky: "Don't leave paintings lying around unfinished!" Well, I really hadn't begun the painting, but I had got the drawing done, and even had taped the edges! although the blue tape is the wrong way to go about that. "Distracts from the proper colors."

After completing my deer painting and the 30 Day Challenge of drawing my grandson, I needed a new project to work on (though I still have not finished my Travel Art Journal about our vacation last year). I plan to take two pieces of work to OKC tomorrow for the State Fair Entries, and I remembered suddenly that our local County Fair is coming up soon, too- entry deadlines for it are next week, I think! In looking over the categories that are open for that, I remembered I had already drawn out this little picture, and maybe the subject matter would fit in a County Fair nicely. Thinking of the old days anyway- - where one might enter their prize cabbage or giant pumpkin! If I can get this finished by the entry deadline, I may enter it, and I am sure this bunch of kale will not wilt! LOL
